I'm a bit of a nomad, having been born in Colorado followed by living abroad for a time. However, many of my formative years were spent in the greater Washington D.C. area and I absolutely love returning for weekend visits to see childhood friends. Since I don't get to spend much more than a weekend visiting the capital these days, I made a quick guide for the must do items when you're only passing through!
W Washington DC Conveniently located just off the Mall, this posh property is nothing short of amazing. The Smithsonian Institute and the White House are both in close proximity!
Hay-Adams Hotel Known for its iconic rooftop view of the Lincoln Memorial, this historic property is a DC area staple for lodging and events alike.
M Street // Georgetown This bustling shopping district has amazing store inside a old buildings with stunning architecture! All Saints, Anthropologie, and Rent the Runway all have outposts along M Street. If you need a pick me up after all your shopping check out the original Georgetown Cupcake, or local favorite Baked & Wired.
Politics & Prose My older sister is a serious bookworm so I've tagged along on many a visits to this DC area staple! Sidenote: Their cafe has an amazing London Fog Latté!
Union Market A curated collection of artisan food shops, Union Market is a great destination with so much to offer.
Sweetgreen I know this is a chain with outposts in other cities, such as NYC and LA, however, I will proudly boast that Sweetgreen has it roots in the DC area! A lunch time staple during high school and beyond, I absolutely love their artisan salads, fresh bread, and tart frozen yogurt!
Busboys & Poets A restaurant, theater, and bookstore, this establishment has a lot to offer. Their vegetarian selections are extensive and delicious as well!
There is certainly no shortage of amazing, and mostly free, museums in the D.C. area. Having visited most the Smithsonian's multiple times I can say with certainty that all of them are worth you time. However, with a shorter amount of dispensable time, there are a few that are musts!
National Portrait Gallery Located in Chinatown, across from the Verizon Center, this is the perfect place to spend the day before catching a concert or sporting event in the evening!
Next on my list to visit the recently opened African American History Museum!
